About Civil Air Patrol

Civil Air Patrol is the Auxiliary of the United States Air Force. With a long history of volunteerism CAP was founded on December 1, 1941. We are a force comprised of people from every background and of all ages. Our three main missions, given to us by our U.S. Congressional charter, are Emergency Services, Cadet Programs and Aerospace Education.

We perform essential Search and Rescue functions for missing aircraft, aircraft emergency beacons, disaster relief, aerial reconnaissance and more. In addition, our Cadet Program aids youths ages 12-18 in learning and experiencing some of the best opportunities available! These opportunities include extensive leadership training, scholarships, rocketry challenge competition, radiotelephone certification, national activities such as flight academy, cyber security competition, international exchanges, search and rescue schools, music academy and much more. We also aim to educate the public on matters of aerospace and aviation.

You don’t need to be a pilot or former military to join. Our membership is open to all U.S. citizens from age 12 and up. Our members wear the United States Air Force uniforms with our distinctive CAP insignia, and carry out missions essential to our civil defense and safety. There is room for people from all walks of life with all sorts of interest, from professionals in medical or law fields to those with interest in radio communication, public affairs, education, and more.

“I’ve learned to respect myself. CAP has brought out the ‘true person’ in me.”
– Cadet Anna Dell Apple, California Wing

Membership benefits include eligibility for academic and flight scholarships, free training and education, expenses-paid travel abroad, automatic promotion to E-3 upon enlisting in the U.S. Military, the opportunity to learn to pilot an aircraft, invaluable leadership skills, resume building and more.

Civil Air Patrol is one of the nations best kept secrets. With opportunities in so many areas of interest, CAP can be an incredibly rewarding experience.
