Quarterly schedule updated
The quarterly schedule for July-September 2008 has been updated, and is available here.
174th FW Change of Command
Central New York Group will be participating in the Change of Command ceremony for the 174th Fighter Wing, New York Air National Guard. The change of command is taking place on 04 May 2008, from 1200-1530, at Hancock Field.
Cadets and senior members interested in participating should let 1st Lt Reed know as soon as possible. CAP will be tasked with seating dignitaries before the ceremony begins, and CAP will have a flight in the Wing formation during the ceremony.
It is a great honor to be considered part of the 174th FW family, and maximum participation is strongly encouraged.
Syracuse Squadron Hosts Bivouac
Members of the Syracuse, Utica, and F.R. Sussey (Fulton) squadrons met at Highland Forest on 12-13 April for a wilderness and Emergency Services bivouac. Members participated in a variety of activities, including compass courses, basic survival skills, radio communications, and ground team tasks.
Cadets got to experience most of the seasons in the same weekend, as the weather rotated through sunny, rainy, and snowy.
Below are some pictures from the activity. Click a picture to enlarge it.
OPSEC Training
As a reminder, all members are required to complete the CAP Operations Security (OPSEC) training by March 31st. If you haven’t already completed the OPSEC training, you may do so online at:
https://tests.cap.af.mil/opsec/
If you have questions, see Maj Jones.
Change to Cadet Rank Insignia
As a reminder, cadet airmen and NCOs now wear the rank insignia (chevrons) on both sides of their blues collar, just like they do on the BDUs. The mandatory wear date for this change was March 1st. The only cadets who wear the CAP cutout are C/ABs.
Please see your flight staff if you need another rank insignia.
Meeting Cancelled Tonight
Due to adverse weather conditions, the meeting tonight (Feb 27th) has been cancelled. We’ll see you next Wednesday, March 5th, in Blues.
Membership Survey
The Central New York Group Commander, Maj Anthony, is conducting a survey related to emergency services operations in the Group, and it is open to all members.
All cadets and senior members are encouraged to download the survey, fill it out (using “x” marks, or by highlighting your answer), and return it to the E-mail address shown in the survey. See Maj Jones if you have any questions.

2008 NYWG Encampment
Information has been posted regarding the 2008 NYWG Encampment. The encampment is 19-26 July and will be held at Stratton Air National Guard Base in Scotia, NY.
The encampment web site is http://encampment.nywgcadets.org/
Here are the relevant dates and deadlines:
- April 1: Deadline to apply for cadet command staff (cadet commander, cadet deputy commander, cadet executive officer)
- May 10: Deadline to apply for all other cadet staff positions.
- May 16-18: Leadership Workshop, Senior Member Mentor Workshop. All cadet and senior staff applicants are expected to attend, and it’s especially valuable for first-time staffers. Staff selection will take place at this workshop.
- May 24: Deadline for first-time cadets to apply. It is strongly recommended that cadets get their applications in well before this deadline.
- June 13-15: Staff Skills Workshop. Required for all cadets and senior members that are serving on staff.
- July 17: Encampment staff arrive
- July 19-26: Encampment
- July 27: Encampment staff depart
We have numerous encampment alumni in the squadron. If you’re interested in applying as a first-time attendee, or on staff, see C/CMSgt Coons, C/Lt Col Brooks, Maj Brodsky, or Maj Jones, all of whom have attended multiple encampments.
NCSA Reminder
Just a reminder that applications for National Cadet Special Activities (NCSAs) need to be submitted online no later than January 15th. The date for NCSA review boards will be announced soon (it will be within the next 30 days).
More information is available at cap.gov/ncsa.
NYWG Flight Academy
New York Wing will once again be hosting a powered flight academy concurrent with the Wing Encampment. Cadets must be at least 16 years old, hold the rank of C/MSgt or higher, and have completed an encampment to apply.
More information is available here. If you are interested in applying, you should talk to Maj Brodsky soon to learn more about the requirements.
The flight academy is a very cost effective way to begin flight training. Last year, four of the six cadets soloed, with the other two coming very close to soloing. It is an excellent opportunity for cadets looking to pursue their pilot’s license.
Jan-Mar Schedule now available
The quarterly schedule for Jan-Mar 2008 is now available here. As a reminder, there is no meeting tonight. See you on January 9th.
